Environmental Activist Urges Politicians to Embrace Northern Ireland’s Climate Change Act Following Post-A5 Ruling Amendments

An environmental advocate has recently emphasized that politicians in Northern Ireland need to take responsibility for the Climate Change Act. This call comes after a High Court judge stopped the A5 road upgrade project due to its failure to comply with the law.

On Monday, the Department for Infrastructure was found to have violated its duties under the Act when it ordered the road’s construction last October. This is now the third time the A5 dual carriageway project has faced legal challenges since it was first proposed nearly twenty years ago.

The A5 roadway connects Derry and Aughnacloy in Co Tyrone. Sadly, over 50 lives have been lost on this road since 2006, raising serious safety concerns alongside the environmental issues.

In light of the latest legal setback, some politicians are calling for changes to the Climate Change Act. For instance, members of the SDLP want to ensure that the law cannot be used to delay projects that aim to protect lives.

DUP member, Jonathan Buckley, criticized the current emissions targets, labeling them as a “dead weight” on local governance. Initially, the DUP and UUP set a goal for an 82% emissions reduction by 2050.

Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins has expressed her commitment to the Climate Change Act but acknowledged the need for a broader review to determine its implications moving forward.

Declan Allison, a campaigner with Friends of the Earth NI, insists that politicians should take ownership of the Act. He argues that they had opportunities to shape it during its development at Stormont. He warned against merely adjusting the law when it becomes inconvenient.

Allison emphasizes that the Climate Change Act is rooted in science, guiding necessary greenhouse gas reductions. He believes that any initiatives counter to these goals shouldn’t proceed. “We must align our infrastructure projects with environmental needs instead of just making minor tweaks,” he stated.

To underscore the importance of these issues, studies indicate that climate-related events, such as floods and heatwaves, are increasing worldwide. In fact, a recent report from the World Meteorological Organization shows that climate change has caused a significant increase in extreme weather events, impacting communities everywhere.
