Environmental groups are preparing for another fight against the Trump administration. They are facing a wave of executive orders, budget cuts, and job losses, especially at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
After speaking with several group leaders, it’s clear that not every challenge will happen right away. Many of Trump’s orders are still in the early stages and haven’t turned into specific actions that can be challenged in court.
David Doniger from the Natural Resources Defense Council pointed out, “Trump is clearly targeting climate and clean-energy standards.” This has raised concerns among environmental advocates who have fought hard to establish these protections.
In the meantime, groups are noticing that cutting jobs at the EPA might hurt the administration in the long run. The EPA has demoted some long-term officials and put employees in the Office of Environmental Justice on leave. The Department of Justice has also seen significant staff changes.
Environmental advocates believe that losing experienced staff now could make it more difficult for the administration to change regulations later. Rule-making requires a lot of expertise, and that knowledge is often found in the very people being let go.
