James Payne, the acting head of the EPA, has removed all members from two key science advisory committees. This shake-up allows the Trump administration to appoint new members and influence the direction of these panels.
In a recent email, Payne explained that the decision was made to “reset” the Clean Air Scientific Advisory Committee and the Science Advisory Board. The goal is to align the scientific advice with the agency’s mission and legal obligations.
The EPA plans to seek nominations for new committee members soon, and previous members are welcome to reapply.
The Clean Air Scientific Advisory Committee (CASAC) plays a crucial role in reviewing air quality standards related to pollutants like lead and ozone. The Science Advisory Board (SAB) provides important scientific advice across various issues affecting the agency.
Interestingly, Payne’s choice of the word “reset” mirrors a similar tactic used by former EPA Administrator Michael Regan under President Biden. In 2021, Regan removed members from both panels, citing a need to correct issues from Trump’s administration.
