The trouble started in the first inning after Rafael Devers hit a towering two-run home run. He paused to watch the ball leave the park, and that didn’t sit well with Rockies pitcher Kyle Freeland. As players from both teams rushed in, punches were thrown in the chaos. Giants pitcher Logan Webb later commented, “Surprised it hasn’t happened before with that guy [Freeland]. Just kind of runs his mouth a lot, and Raffy got him good.”
Umpires managed to separate the teams, and several players were ejected. Freeland, along with Giants players Matt Chapman and Willy Adames, had to leave the game. Despite the commotion, Devers’ home run counted, and he was allowed to finish running the bases after the dust settled.
The Giants went on to win 7-4, largely thanks to a three-run fifth inning fueled by home runs from Wilmer Flores and Casey Schmitt. The Giants are now making a strong push for a wild-card spot in the National League, winning nine out of their last ten games.
On the other hand, the Rockies are struggling, holding the worst record in Major League Baseball at 39-100. They are the only team already eliminated from playoff contention this season.
