Spike Lee’s anticipated documentary series on Colin Kaepernick won’t be released after all. Both Lee and ESPN announced that they decided not to move forward due to creative differences. In a statement, ESPN expressed its appreciation for the work done on the project, even if it won’t see the light of day.
Lee confirmed the series is off while attending a fundraiser in Beverly Hills, saying, “It’s not coming out. That’s all I can say.” When asked for reasons, he cited a nondisclosure agreement, leaving fans and followers in the dark.
Kaepernick became a household name in 2016 when he kneeled during the national anthem to protest systemic racism and police brutality. Since then, he hasn’t played in the NFL. Many commentators believe his activism contributed to teams being hesitant to sign him. In 2019, he settled a collusion grievance against the league.
