Essentia Health and SEIU Workers in Brainerd Strike a Groundbreaking Agreement: What It Means for Patients and Staff

Essentia Health recently announced a new three-year contract with the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) for its Brainerd employees. This agreement, which impacts 158 workers, includes a notable 10.5% wage increase spread across three years and introduces shift bonuses.

A key element in the contract is the "cross-facility floating" staffing practice. This voluntary approach allows staff to choose shifts at different Essentia locations that experience higher patient demand. The aim is to ensure that the most skilled professionals are available where they are needed most, maintaining high-quality patient care.

Essentia Health has a strong record of supporting its workforce. They currently have 54 bargaining units representing around 6,500 employees. In the past year alone, Essentia successfully negotiated over 20 contracts, all geared toward enhancing patient care and employee satisfaction.

Todd Defreece, Essentia’s senior vice president of operations in Brainerd, expressed enthusiasm about the new contract, highlighting the dedicated work of employees and its significance for local patient care. Dawn Norris, an SEIU member, shared pride in the contract, noting its positive impacts on wage structures and clarity around vacation policies.
