CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Public health officials are advising caution for those who work with cattle or birds regarding avian influenza. However, for most people, the risk is low, according to Dr. Patrick Jackson, an infectious disease expert at the University of Virginia.
During an online briefing, Dr. Jackson noted that there hasn’t been any sustained human-to-human transmission of the virus. He explained that this lack of transmission is a critical point in assessing any potential pandemic threat.
“If you don’t have direct contact with cattle or birds, there’s really no need for concern,” Dr. Jackson said. “For office workers or tradespeople who don’t deal with birds regularly, there’s no need to change your routine. Enjoy your chicken sandwich without worry!”
He also reassured the public that our food supply is safe. Still, there may be challenges in egg production and distribution as more poultry flocks are culled to control the spread of avian flu.
