Essential Court Update: Key Environmental Rulings You Need to Know (January 6, 2026)

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) recently questioned the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the project contractor, Gawar Mandi Highways, about potential environmental penalties. This follows violations related to the disposal of debris during the four-lane expansion from Bijni to Mandi. Authorities found debris dumped in unauthorized spots, raising serious environmental concerns.

NHAI has been slow to respond. Historically, their absence in these hearings often leads to delays in addressing serious environmental issues. During the latest hearing, NHAI’s chairman joined via phone and asked for more time, promising to address the matter. The tribunal noted this response but emphasized the importance of having the contractor and the Ministry of Environment take part for a fair assessment of the situation.

Turning to recruitment issues, the Madhya Pradesh Pollution Control Board (MPPCB) can’t fill its vacant positions on its own. The Board must rely on other state recruitment agencies, which slows down the hiring process. To tackle this, the MPPCB is proposing rule amendments that would allow it to recruit staff independently. This proposal is currently pending with the Madhya Pradesh government.

As of now, MPPCB has requested 18 scientist positions, and recruitment is moving ahead. Similarly, the Staff Selection Board is actively working on filling 20 chemist roles and 11 laboratory assistant positions.

In Manipur, the local Pollution Control Board is also facing staff shortages. The government is working to fill approved vacancies to enhance the Board’s effectiveness. Once new staff are on board, there will be efforts to upgrade the lab facilities to meet necessary standards. The NGT previously instructed all pollution control boards to provide status updates, emphasizing the urgency of these issues across the country.

Addressing environmental and recruitment challenges is vital not only for compliance but for protecting our ecosystems. With effective governance and timely action, we can make a real difference in environmental protection and public health.
