MIAMI – The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has declared this flu season as high severity for the first time in years.
This winter, there have been 24 million flu cases and about 13,000 deaths across the country. The CDC emphasizes the seriousness of the situation.
Dr. Jessica Quinones, an emergency room doctor at HCA Kendall, urges everyone to take precautions. “Wash your hands regularly, get your flu shot, and avoid close contact with others, especially if you’re feeling unwell,” she advises. While masks aren’t mandatory, it might be wise to wear one if you’re around sick individuals.
Feeling Unwell? Here’s What to Do
If you catch the flu, Dr. Quinones recommends staying home for at least seven days. It’s crucial to monitor your symptoms closely, especially if you have a fever. “Wait at least 24 hours after your fever breaks before going out,” she explains, adding that flu can spread easily during this time.
Watch out for these common flu symptoms: high fever, muscle aches, body pain, and headaches. Be alert for more serious signs like a persistent high fever, shortness of breath, or difficulty breathing.
Anyone can contract the flu, but certain groups are at higher risk. “Elderly individuals and those with existing health issues often experience more severe symptoms,” Dr. Quinones states. Still, flu cases are reported among all age groups this season.
Even though flu activity appears to be decreasing in South Florida, as reported by Jackson and Broward Health, Dr. Quinones emphasizes the importance of vaccinations. “It’s never too late to get vaccinated, especially for older adults and those at higher risk,” she suggests.
