Essential Guide to the DoD Probationary Workforce: Key Insights and Opportunities

Yesterday, the Secretary shared that the Department of Defense is reviewing its probationary employees. This aligns with the President’s goal of making the Federal workforce more efficient and effective.

This isn’t just happening at the Defense Department; all government agencies are involved in this review. We’re committed to following through with this process carefully.

We anticipate that our civilian workforce will shrink by about 5-8%. This will help us focus on the President’s priorities and improve our readiness.

Starting next week, around 5,400 probationary employees will be let go as part of this effort. After this initial step, we will pause hiring to better understand our staffing needs while ensuring compliance with all relevant laws.

The Secretary emphasized that it’s important for the public’s interest to let go of employees who aren’t essential to our mission. Taxpayers expect us to review our workforce critically and eliminate any overlaps.

As we move forward with these changes, we will treat every employee with the dignity and respect they deserve. Those who serve and protect our nation should always be valued.
