BOSTON –– The Boston Bruins will face off against the New York Rangers this Friday at TD Garden for a Black Friday matchup.
The Bruins’ depth will be put to the test as they take the ice without some key players. David Pastrnak and Pavel Zacha are both out due to injuries and are listed as day-to-day.
Head coach Marco Sturm expressed confidence, saying, “We’ve handled this before. I’m not worried because we’ve succeeded with missing players in the past. If we stick to our structure—especially defensively—we’ll be fine.”
In response to the injuries, Georgii Merkulov has been called up from Providence. The 25-year-old forward has been impressive in the AHL this season, scoring 14 points with six goals and eight assists in just 17 games. He joined the Bruins as a free agent in 2022 and has played 10 NHL games since then.
Another addition to the lineup is Casey Mittelstadt, who returns after recovering from a lower-body injury. He last played on November 6 and had nine points in 15 games before his injury. Riley Tufte will also step in to fill a bottom-six role.
“He hasn’t practiced with us yet, but we need him today. We’re thin with Zacha and Pastrnak out,” Sturm noted about Mittelstadt.
In other roster moves, Michael Callahan has been assigned to Providence, and Matěj Blümel has been placed on long-term injured reserve after sustaining an injury in Wednesday’s game.
This game will mark the first of three meetings between the Bruins and Rangers this season. Sturm acknowledged the Rangers’ recent improvement, noting, “They had a tough start, but they’ve been performing well lately and have been strong on the road. They’re gradually getting their players back, too.”
The Bruins’ ability to adapt to injuries speaks to their resilience, a quality highlighted by many sports analysts. According to recent statistics, teams with robust depth often outperform expectations when star players are injured, maintaining competitiveness and even sometimes finding new strengths within their roster.
As the rivalry continues, fans can expect an exciting match, with the stakes always high when these two teams meet. As the season progresses, this game may shape the standings and provide insight into how both teams handle adversity moving forward.
