In my first year at Salem Reporter, I wrote about business, health care, and community events while sharpening my photography skills.
I joined the team in June as an intern focusing on public health. During that time, I followed changes in health care policy at the federal level while also covering local tales and snapping photos.
Now, as a full-time reporter, I continue to explore these areas. When I’m not writing, I’m often out capturing the essence of Salem through my lens.
Here are some of my favorite stories from 2025:
Ironman 70.3 Triathlon: A Community Triumph
Waking up at 4 a.m. to cover the Ironman triathlon was a challenge, but worth it. I arrived downtown by 5 a.m. and met photographer Laura Tesler, who helped me learn the ropes. We shot photos of racers gearing up to dive into the Willamette River.
Throughout the event, I interviewed volunteers who worked tirelessly from dawn to dusk. Their dedication made for a heartwarming story that highlighted the strength of our community.
Covid-19 Vaccines Without Prescription
This fall, many people in Salem found themselves confused when they were turned away from pharmacies seeking Covid-19 booster shots. Amid this chaos, Santiam Hospital & Clinics became a beacon of hope by offering vaccines without a prescription. This was unusual for Oregon and a significant help during a tough time.
Local Concerns About a Proposed National Cemetery
In the fall, over a hundred Macleay residents gathered to voice their concerns about a proposed veterans’ cemetery. This was their first town hall since 2021, showcasing the community’s active role in local issues. Concerns ranged from water supply to increased traffic. Their passion for preserving their rural lifestyle is something to admire.
Maravilla’s Bakery: 17 Years of Resilience
Maravilla’s Bakery in east Salem is a local favorite, and for good reason. Owners Juan Maravilla and Alma Ignacio started from scratch, juggling the bakery with raising two children. Despite the pandemic and rising ingredient costs, they’ve persisted, showcasing an inspiring story of hard work and community support.
As I capture stories like these, I see how intertwined they are with people’s lives. Each event we cover is not just a moment in time; it’s a reflection of our lives here in Salem. Understanding these connections helps us appreciate the strength and resilience of our community. In an age where news often feels overwhelming, there’s a need to celebrate the positive moments we create together.
