Climate change is reshaping the workforce. Issues like rising temperatures, severe weather, and pollution are increasingly affecting worker safety. According to the International Labour Organization (ILO), over 2.4 billion workers—more than 70% of the global workforce—are exposed to excessive heat each year. This impacts everyone, from outdoor laborers to indoor office employees.
Outdoor jobs, like agriculture and logistics, face severe risks due to climate conditions. At the same time, changes made to adapt to climate issues, like new technologies and infrastructure, can also bring new dangers if not properly managed.
To help organizations navigate these challenges, the British Standards Institution (BSI) has introduced an international standard called ISO/PAS 45007:2026. This document provides practical guidance on managing risks tied to climate change and the actions needed to combat it.
ISO/PAS 45007 covers various risks, including natural disasters like flooding and extreme weather, and changes introduced by climate adaptation efforts. It also highlights opportunities for improving worker well-being and productivity. Anne Hayes from BSI emphasized the urgency of this guidance: “Climate change is not a distant concern. It’s already impacting workplaces and the people in them.”
The new standard aims to empower organizations, whether they have formal Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) systems like ISO 45001 or not. It focuses on a coordinated approach to risk management, making it relevant for businesses of all sizes and sectors.
By aligning with the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) model, ISO/PAS 45007 encourages organizations to assess risks and adopt preventive measures. The document draws on climate science to help identify and manage health and safety impacts effectively.
As climate change continues to evolve, so will its effects on the workforce. Experts urge organizations to adapt proactively to protect workers. Recent trends on social media show growing concern among employees and the public regarding workplace safety amid climate threats. More businesses are now openly discussing their strategies for sustainability as a result.
