The government shutdown has reached day 27, making it one of the longest in U.S. history. With food assistance programs at risk, the USDA has announced that federal food aid will stop on November 1. This situation is stirring concern among families who rely on these benefits. House Republicans will hold a press conference to discuss the shutdown as Senate sessions begin.
In other news, President Trump is visiting Asia for the first time since taking office again. He’s in Malaysia today and will soon head to Tokyo for talks with Japan’s new prime minister. Strengthening the U.S.-Japan alliance is a key focus for both leaders.
Meanwhile, the old Harbor Bridge is in its final demolition phase. Workers are preparing to lower the center span onto a barge. This process is weather dependent and is expected to be completed by tomorrow. For safety reasons, the shared path on the new bridge will be closed during the demolition from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
In local developments, construction is starting on Norton Street near Sam Houston Elementary to improve water infrastructure. Expect one-way traffic and possible delays as crews work until December.
Traffic changes are also coming to Nueces Bay Boulevard. Eastbound traffic will be redirected as crews replace a water line. This alteration will last for about six weeks.
