Essential Updates on Federal Directives: What You Need to Know!

Dear VCU community,

Recently, we’ve been looking closely at new White House orders and federal guidelines that affect higher education. Some court decisions have temporarily slowed down changes to research funding and diversity programs.

Importantly, a recent letter from the U.S. Department of Education outlines how federal laws about nondiscrimination apply to us. The letter states that colleges must not use race in decisions on admissions, hiring, promotions, or any part of campus life. It also warns that we need to comply by February 28, or we risk losing federal funding.

In response, we formed a task force made up of university leaders to make sure we’re adhering to this letter. The initial review shows that most of our policies align with these guidelines, but we also recognize some areas need more work.

VCU is committed to creating a fair and inclusive environment for everyone. Next week, we will provide updated guidance to our HR teams and hiring managers regarding these changes.

We will also review our strategic plans to ensure they meet the new federal expectations and will seek input from students, faculty, and staff during this process.

As these regulations evolve, we expect more updates and will be ready to adjust as necessary. We have set up a website to keep you informed about these changes.

Additionally, we have resources available that focus on research-related federal actions. Please check these sites regularly for updates.

During times of change, let’s remember what makes VCU unique. Our dedication to serving all those who depend on us is essential to our success.

We firmly believe that adhering to federal guidelines and supporting every member of our community can go hand in hand. VCU will always strive to be a welcoming place where everyone can reach their full potential.

Sincerely,

Michael Rao, President
Fotis Sotiropoulos, Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs
Marlon Levy, Senior Vice President for Health Sciences and CEO of VCU Health
Meredith Weiss, Senior Vice President for Finance and Administration and Chief Financial Officer
Faye Belgrave, Vice President for Inclusive Excellence and Chief Diversity Officer
