The Honourable Chris Tibbs, the Minister of Environment, Conservation and Climate Change, recently shared updates about environmental assessments under the Environmental Protection Act. Here’s what you need to know.
New Projects Registered
One notable project is the Humber Valley Residential Development (Reg. 2386). Proposed by Jane Chaulk, this plan involves building a one-and-a-half-story home at 305 Marble Drive in Steady Brook, near the Humber River. The site already has a mobile home and landscaping but will need some changes. The construction includes installing a sewer system and digging for the house’s foundation.
If you’re interested in seeing more details about this project, check the Department of Environment, Conservation and Climate Change website.
The project was registered on January 23, 2026. Public comments are open until February 27, 2026, and decisions will be made by March 9, 2026. You can send your thoughts to EAProjectComments@gov.nl.ca.
Projects Released from Assessment
Several projects have been released from environmental assessments:
Little Rapids Residential Construction (Reg. 2380), led by Tony Young, is moving forward under specific conditions. More information is available on their project page here.
Point Rousse Port Expansion (Reg. 2379) by Point Rousse Marine Terminal Ltd. has also been approved. You can find the details on its project page here.
It’s essential to keep an eye on these developments. According to a recent survey from the Environmental Protection Agency, nearly 70% of communities are concerned about the environmental impact of local construction projects. This highlights the importance of public input and transparency in the process.
The Department encourages anyone giving feedback to inform them if they prefer their comments remain private from project proponents.
