Essex has once again earned top marks for its commitment to the environment, achieving the highest rating from the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) for the fourth consecutive year. This annual assessment evaluates how various regions manage their environmental impact.
The CDP’s rating is no small feat. Over 1,000 cities, states, and regions provided detailed environmental data for 2025. This includes more than 22,100 businesses that represent over half of the world’s market capitalization. Essex was one of just twenty locations in the UK to make the CDP A List, and notably, one of only two county councils.
To earn this prestigious rating, Essex had to demonstrate strong leadership. This involved meeting strict criteria, including reporting transparently on its environmental and climate action plans. The county also conducted a comprehensive risk assessment to understand how climate change could affect its community, setting clear goals for future adaptability.
A key part of Essex’s strategy has been its impressive tree-planting initiative. The region has planted over 1,099,295 trees as part of the Essex Forest Partnership, exceeding its five-year commitment. This not only enhances local biodiversity but also helps in the fight against climate change.
Other initiatives include the Essex Water Strategy, a Waste Strategy for Essex, and plans for local nature recovery. Programs promoting cycling and sustainable building designs are also in place. Notably, Essex County Council offers Carbon Literacy Training to ensure that its members are well-equipped to face climate challenges.
Leaders in Essex are proud of this achievement. Councillor Peter Schwier emphasized that being recognized as a climate leader requires dedication and consistent effort. “Our ongoing work to mitigate climate effects and promote sustainable growth benefits all residents,” he said.
Sherry Madera, CEO of CDP, added that when local governments embrace transparency in their climate plans, they not only protect their communities but also foster opportunities for innovation. This is a reminder of how data-driven strategies can achieve sustainable growth while benefitting people and the planet.
