Ethan Strand from North Carolina has made headlines again. At the 2025 BU Terrier Classic, he conquered the mile with a time of 3:48.25. This incredible performance set a new collegiate record and placed him as the third-fastest in history for indoor mile running.
This achievement follows his impressive start to the season in December, where he broke the collegiate record for the 3,000m with a time of 7:30.15 at the BU Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener. Strand’s ability to excel at different distances has made him a standout athlete.
During the race, Strand positioned himself strategically. With one lap remaining, he moved from third to first, quickly creating a significant lead. As he sprinted toward the finish line, he finished strong, celebrating with raised arms as he crossed it.
His final 200 meters were particularly thrilling, clocking a split time of 27.10 seconds. This moment marked him as the first collegiate athlete to ever finish a mile in under 3:50. The only runners ahead of him in these indoor rankings are Yomif Kejelcha from Ethiopia and American record holder Yared Nuguse.
In the race, Robert Farken took second place with a time of 3:49.45, while Adam Fogg from UA Baltimore Distance finished third at 3:49.85.
