Ethiopia is serious about tackling climate change. Mensur pointed out that the country is actively working on its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC). The NDC runs through 2030 and aligns with Ethiopia’s Climate Resilient Green Economy Development Strategy.

Mensur emphasized that while other African nations are developing their climate strategies, Ethiopia stands out with its comprehensive initiatives, including the Green Legacy Initiative, which promotes tree planting to enhance biodiversity.

There’s a practical side to Ethiopia’s renewable energy aspirations. The country is heavily investing in hydropower, which not only allows it to export electricity but also boosts energy security for neighboring nations. This has positioned Ethiopia as a significant player in Africa’s energy market.

In fact, Ethiopia has a tremendous renewable energy potential. Estimates suggest it can produce up to 45 gigawatts from hydropower alone, with wind and geothermal sources offering an additional 15 gigawatts. This could significantly influence regional energy dynamics.
