ETSU’s Documentary Campaign Shines Bright: Awarded Best in Show – Discover the Story!

East Tennessee State University (ETSU) recently received top honors at the 2026 Tennessee College Public Relations Association (TCPRA) Communication Awards. Their documentary, “The ETSU Marching Bucs: A Comeback Story,” showcases the band’s inspiring journey—returning after a 10-year break and performing in the 2024 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

Out of 462 entries from 20 institutions, ETSU’s documentary stood out, earning the coveted Best in Show award. This celebration took place during the TCPRA Conference in Chattanooga.

The release of the documentary was more than just a screening. It was an event that brought together students, families, alumni, and community members. ETSU’s marketing team, along with students and band members, created buzz through trailers and social media, significantly expanding the documentary’s reach.

Jess Vodden, the vice president of marketing and communications at ETSU, expressed pride in the team’s efforts. She highlighted the collective work that contributed to this achievement.

In addition to Best in Show, ETSU secured several more awards, including golds for various promotional campaigns and videos. This reflects a broader trend in higher education, where storytelling and engagement through multimedia are becoming essential for universities to connect with their communities.

According to a 2022 survey by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education, storytelling increases donor engagement, with 65% of respondents stating they feel more connected to institutions that share personal stories. This confirms the value of heartfelt narratives in connecting with audiences.

The spirit of camaraderie and collaboration visible in this documentary’s release serves as a reminder of the power of community in education. As universities like ETSU continue to tell their stories, they not only celebrate their past but also inspire future generations.
