Avalanche receive: F Brock Nelson (50% salary retained), F William Dufour
Islanders receive: First-round pick in 2026 or 2027, conditional third-round pick in 2028, F Calum Ritchie, D Oliver Kylington (later traded to Anaheim Ducks for future considerations)
Every trade deadline has its standout player, and Brock Nelson has become that player this season. He’s a highly skilled forward who has consistently delivered on the ice. The Colorado Avalanche recognized this when they pursued him. Nelson has a strong record of scoring and playmaking, contributing significantly to the New York Islanders’ performance over the years. Without his efforts, it’s fair to wonder how successful the Islanders might have been.
In Colorado, Nelson will play as a second-line center, supporting superstar Nathan MacKinnon. The Avalanche have been searching for a reliable second center since they lost Nazem Kadri, and now they’ve filled that gap. Nelson’s versatility and capability make him a great fit for the team aiming for a deep playoff run.
For the Islanders, trading Nelson might hurt, but it could also be a smart move. They received valuable assets in return, including a promising prospect in Calum Ritchie. At 6-foot-2 and 190 pounds, Ritchie is a strong center who’s having a standout season in the OHL. Losing a key player like Nelson can sting, but Ritchie could help fill that void in the future.

Islanders grade: A+
The Avalanche needed a reliable second-line center, especially after Casey Mittelstadt’s lackluster performance this season. Nelson stands out as an elite forward who can score and play well defensively. Despite some dip in his points due to the Islanders’ struggles, he remains a strong performer at even strength. His ability to transition the puck effectively makes him a key addition for Colorado’s lineup.
While giving up a first-round pick and a top prospect seems steep for a rental player, Nelson’s ability solidifies the Avalanche’s chances in a competitive Western Conference. For the Islanders, it’s a step back to reevaluate and rebuild after facing injuries and challenges this season. Their prospect pool needed replenishing, and trades like this help secure a brighter future.
