Evaluating the F-35 Deal: Key Pros and Cons India Needs to Consider

India faces an important decision regarding the F-35 fighter jet offer from the United States. While the Indian Air Force (IAF) is eager to accept this cutting-edge aircraft, particularly due to concerns about China, careful consideration is needed.

This year, India is also moving forward with purchasing six additional P-8I maritime patrol aircraft and collaborating on the production of Stryker armored vehicles and Javelin anti-tank missiles. These steps represent a deepening defense partnership between the U.S. and India, highlighted by commitments from leaders like Prime Minister Modi and former President Trump to enhance military cooperation.

The F-35 is known for its advanced technology and stealth capabilities. However, the proposal is still in its early stages, and the formal process of acquisition has not yet begun. Trump’s statement emphasized a significant increase in military sales to India and a review of U.S. policies on fighter jet transfers.

As India considers the F-35, it must weigh multiple factors. The price, available technology, maintenance costs, and the impact on India’s own fifth-generation fighter project, the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA), are all crucial elements. The cabinet committee on security already allocated over ₹15,000 crore for the AMCA’s development last March.

Currently, the operational fifth-generation jets include the American F-35 and F/A-22, the Chinese Chengdu J-20, and the Russian Sukhoi-57. China’s military advancements, particularly the deployment of J-20s near Indian borders, add to India’s urgency in addressing its air force capabilities.

The IAF currently operates only 30 fighter squadrons, though it should ideally have 42.5. Given that the AMCA is still years away from production, the IAF is understandably interested in acquiring F-35s as an interim solution to bolster its capabilities.

In summary, while the F-35 offers impressive benefits for India’s defense posture, it requires a thoughtful analysis of both the immediate needs and long-term strategic goals.
