The launch of the Nintendo Switch 2 is finally here! If you preordered the Switch 2 Mario Kart World Bundle or the standalone console, you might know when you can start playing. If not, there’s still a shot at snagging one after the June 5 release date.
Preorder Availability
Since preorders began on April 24, they’ve largely been sold out. The Nintendo Store reopened preorders on May 8, but only by invitation. If you registered but haven’t received a response, you may have to wait longer. Walmart has had some sporadic restocks, making it the most likely place for additional preorders.
Walmart claims it will deliver preorders by 9 AM local time on launch day, provided you place your order by 8 AM ET on June 4. So, keep an eye on their site for possible restocks after that deadline.
Regardless, the Switch 2 will be available at various retailers both online and in-store starting June 5.
Launch Events
Walmart isn’t planning a midnight launch. If you’re local, you may want to check with your nearest store to confirm their schedule. While Walmart locations are no longer open 24 hours, some do open as early as 6 AM, so don’t be surprised if lines start forming beforehand.
There have been reports of canceled preorders at Walmart due to system glitches. Also, Walmart seems to have run out of many first-party accessories, which is odd since other retailers like Target and Best Buy still have them. They could be holding back some stock for launch day, so it might be worth checking back.
Other Retail Launches
Best Buy plans a midnight launch at 12:01 AM ET on June 5. Attendees might even get a free commemorative Nintendo coin. You can check if your local Best Buy is participating.
Target will host events from 8 AM to 4 PM on June 5. They’re offering “ultra-fun giveaways,” with the largest event in Orlando featuring games and Nintendo merchandise!
After the launch, Target will restock on June 6, giving another chance to those who miss out on launch day.
GameStop is organizing a midnight launch, allowing pickups from 9 PM PT on June 4. Some stores will offer free Red Bull, but you’ll need a Pro membership for that perk.
National retailers like Sam’s Club and Costco will also carry the Switch 2 on June 5, but only for members. Sam’s will have the Mario Kart World Bundle, while Costco plans to include a 12-month Switch Online membership with their bundle.
On Amazon, don’t expect to find the Switch 2 for preorder. They haven’t sold first-party Nintendo products recently. Any listings from Amazon when the console launches will likely be third-party resellers. Make sure to check seller reputations if you go that route.
Accessories and Games
Numerous accessories will launch alongside the console, including:
- Switch 2 Pro Controller – $85
- Joy-Con 2 Controllers (2-Pack) – $95
- Switch 2 Carrying Case – $40
These accessories provide users with a variety of options to enhance their gaming experience. Nintendo aims to offer a blend of high-quality and fun products.
As for games, the Switch 2 will feature a range of first-party titles at launch, including popular series. It’s noteworthy that while many are physical, not all will contain the complete game on the cartridge itself.
Amiibo fans won’t be left out, either. On June 5, seven new figures will debut, including several from Legend of Zelda and Street Fighter 6.
Launching alongside this console is a pivotal moment for Nintendo. It caters to both long-time fans and newcomers eager to immerse themselves in gaming. The excitement leading up to the release is palpable, and it’s clear that the Switch 2 is set to be a major player in the market.
