Everything You Need to Know About the 2026 Met Gala: Trends, Themes, and Star Appearances!

Met Gala 2023: Fashion, Art, and Glamour

Fashion lovers know this: fashion is art. This year, the Met Gala is set to explore that connection even more. On May 4, guests will walk up the iconic carpeted steps with a dress code inspired by the spring exhibit at the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The theme, “Costume Art,” will showcase around 200 garments alongside 200 art pieces, highlighting how fashion and art have intertwined over time.

What to Know About the Event

The Met Gala takes place on the first Monday in May every year. It serves as a fundraiser for the Costume Institute, the only self-sustaining department at the museum. Last year, the gala raised a whopping $31 million, marking its success as a high-profile charity event.

Who’s Hosting?

This year, Beyoncé will co-chair the event, alongside Nicole Kidman, Venus Williams, and Anna Wintour, the editor of Vogue. The host committee includes notable names like designer Anthony Vaccarello and filmmaker Zoë Kravitz, creating an engaging mix of creativity and talent.

Controversy and Discussion

A lot of buzz surrounds Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez, who are major sponsors of the event. Their involvement has sparked backlash from activist groups like Everyone Hates Elon, which has made headlines on social media for their anti-billionaire messages.

New Features

A significant addition this year is the opening of the Conde M. Nast Galleries, constructed from the former museum retail space. This new area, covering almost 12,000 square feet, will enhance visitor experience, allowing smoother movement between the exhibit and dinner at the Temple of Dendur. It aims to improve crowd management once the exhibit opens to the public on May 10.

Additionally, curator Andrew Bolton is pushing for body positivity. The exhibit will feature a variety of body types often overlooked in art history, like larger bodies and those with disabilities. He has introduced 25 new mannequins that reflect these diverse body types. Notably, several individuals, including disability advocate Sinéad Burke, have allowed their bodies to be digitally scanned for this endeavor.

A Brief History

The Met Gala began in 1948 as a modest midnight supper in Manhattan. Over the years, it evolved into a star-studded event that draws global attention. Today, it is known as one of the most glamorous nights in fashion.

Exclusivity and Price Tags

Can anyone attend? Unfortunately, no. The guest list is exclusive, reserved for those who are highly affluent or influential. If you were lucky enough to score a ticket, it would cost $100,000 for an individual ticket, or $350,000 for a table of ten. Around 400 guests are expected to attend.

Evening Experience

Guests begin the evening by walking the red carpet, taking in the elaborate floral displays in the museum’s lobby. Live music often fills the air, adding to the ambience. After checking in, attendees mingle at cocktails or tour the exhibit before settling down for dinner. As the night goes on, the atmosphere buzzes with anticipation and excitement.

The Met Gala is not just a fashion show; it’s a vibrant celebration of art, culture, and social commentary, making it a must-watch event every year.
