Ex-Arkansas Police Chief Grant Hardin Recaptured After Daring Prison Escape

A former police chief in Arkansas, Grant Hardin, has been recaptured nearly two weeks after escaping from prison. He was found just 1.5 miles from where he broke out, disguised as a law enforcement officer.

Hardin’s escape on May 25 was bold. He wore a makeshift outfit to mimic police officials while serving a 30-year sentence for murder and an additional 50 years for rape. He was confirmed through fingerprint analysis after authorities caught him.

Local law enforcement, with help from tracking dogs, managed to locate him near Moccasin Creek in Izard County. Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders expressed relief over his capture, stating that the community could “breathe a sigh of relief.” She thanked federal agents and the Department of Homeland Security for their support during the search.

Before becoming police chief in Gateway, Hardin had worked for the Eureka Springs Police Department. His crimes have left a lasting impact on the community. Hardin pleaded guilty to first-degree murder for shooting James Appleton in 2017. Appleton was killed while talking to then-Gateway Mayor Andrew Tillman. In addition, DNA evidence linked Hardin to the 1997 rape of Amy Harrison, leading to his second guilty plea.
