Former India bowling coach Bharat Arun believes it’s time for Mohammed Siraj to step up as the leader of the bowling attack, starting with the Test series against England.
Arun has closely followed Siraj’s journey from his early days on the team. Under Arun’s guidance, and while Virat Kohli was captain, Siraj developed into a skilled bowler. With Jasprit Bumrah sidelined due to injury, Siraj now has a crucial opportunity to shine.
“Siraj can prove himself in Bumrah’s absence,” Arun noted. He recalled how Siraj made a mark during India’s memorable win at Lord’s in 2021, taking four wickets in each innings. “This series is a chance for him to grow. He has the experience and skills to become our top bowler now.”
Arun emphasized the importance of mindset for Siraj. “He needs to take on this challenge. Aggressiveness is good, but he must also know when to rein it in. He’s had a solid IPL season and seems to be in good form.”
As of now, Siraj has played 36 Tests, 44 ODIs, and 16 T20s, claiming 100, 71, and 14 wickets, respectively. With the bowling dynamics changing, Siraj’s performance will be under the spotlight more than ever.
The cricketing landscape is shifting. Players like Siraj might find more opportunities to lead, especially with increasing focus on managing player fitness. The cricket world is eager to see how he rises to this occasion.
