Ex-Jaguars Staffer Faces Escalating Legal Troubles After Squandering Million in Stolen Funds on Gambling

Amit Patel’s journey from a Jaguars staff member to a convicted thief is a startling story of betrayal and consequences.

Patel, who worked for the Jacksonville Jaguars, stole over $22 million from the team. Now, he’s facing additional grand theft charges in Florida, according to records from ESPN.

At just 32, Patel has six counts of grand theft against him. In Florida, stealing $100,000 or more is a serious crime, classified as a first-degree felony. It can lead to up to 30 years in prison.

After admitting guilt to wire fraud and illegal monetary transactions in December 2023, Patel was sentenced in March 2024 to six-and-a-half years behind bars. A judge ordered him to pay $21.1 million in restitution to the Jaguars and attend Gamblers Anonymous sessions.

The details of how he committed the crime are shocking. Patel used a virtual credit card program to move funds from the team to gambling sites like FanDuel and DraftKings. He transferred around $21 million, and his lawyer claims that nearly all of it was gambled away.

In a significant twist, Patel later sued FanDuel. He claims the company exploited his gambling addiction, which raises questions about accountability in the gambling industry.

Megha Parekh, the Jaguars’ Executive VP, expressed her disappointment, saying they trusted Patel deeply. The NFL has undergone changes, especially in how teams handle financial and security measures after such incidents.

Interestingly, sports-related fraud is on the rise. According to a recent report, about 50% of sports professionals now face some form of fraud, reflecting broader issues in transparency within athletic organizations.

Patel’s story serves as a cautionary tale about the impact of gambling and the importance of integrity in professional sports. It’s a reminder of how quickly trust can be broken and how it can affect an entire organization. As sports betting becomes more mainstream, awareness around these risks will be crucial.
