A former student from Western Michigan University, Al Allan De Los Santos Mueses, has been charged with sexually assaulting a fellow student back in 2010. Mueses, 40, was arrested on July 1 and extradited from Miami on July 11. He faces four counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct.
The incident reportedly occurred in March 2010 when Mueses met the victim, a 20-year-old woman, at a university recreation center. After the incident, she reported the assault and underwent a forensic medical exam, but no charges were filed at the time.
This case is currently being handled by the Kalamazoo Sexual Assault Kit Initiative (SAKI). Launched in 2016, SAKI aims to investigate and prosecute old sexual assault cases linked to previously untested evidence kits. Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel expressed her gratitude to the team, emphasizing their dedication to bringing justice to survivors of sexual assault.
In Kalamazoo County, SAKI is actively investigating over 200 cold cases of sexual assault dating from 1976 to 2015. Such initiatives are crucial not just for the victims but also for holding perpetrators accountable, as unresolved cases can leave lasting scars on the community.
Mueses was arraigned on July 28 and received a bond of $250,000. He is set for a probable cause conference on August 7, followed by a preliminary examination on August 14.
If anyone has information about this case or similar misconduct by Mueses, they are encouraged to contact Investigator Richard Johnson at Kalamazoo County SAKI.
In recent years, there’s been a significant increase in public awareness regarding sexual assault and the need for justice. Social media platforms have served as critical spaces for survivors to share their stories, creating a wave of support and advocacy for reforms. According to recent statistics, around 80% of sexual assault cases go unreported, highlighting the importance of initiatives like SAKI. As these efforts continue, they pave the way for a future where victims feel empowered to seek justice.
