TAMPA – Move-in week has kicked off at The University of Tampa, marking one of the busiest times of the year. On the first day alone, around 2,000 new students settled into one of the 12 residence halls. By Sunday, a total of 5,000 students will have moved in.
Students are getting help from friends, family, and a group of enthusiastic volunteers known as “WOW” (Week of Welcome). Olivia Mormann, a first-year student, shared her excitement: “I love the campus and the opportunities here. It’s beautiful, and I’m excited to start this journey.”
For many, like Olivia, this is their first time living independently. Her mom, Audrey, expressed a mix of joy and sadness: “I’m very sad to see my first two leave the nest.”
Classes for nearly 12,000 undergraduate and graduate students will start on Monday.
The Week of Welcome is designed to help new students adjust. It includes various games and events aimed at breaking the ice and making new friends. Sofia McGinnis, a leader of the WOW program, remarked, “I wanted to help with move-in because I had a great experience with my own leaders when I started.”
Throughout this week, WOW volunteers are on hand to assist students with moving their belongings into their new homes. Freshmen usually stay in dorms like Austin Hall, Brevard Hall, and the Grand Center. The Grand Center is the newest addition, housing 700 students with modern double and triple rooms.
As we reflect on this busy week, studies show that a supportive transition to college can lead to better academic performance. According to a recent survey by the National Freshman Transition Project, students who participate in orientation activities are more likely to feel connected to their campus community. This is especially true for freshmen.
In conclusion, move-in week isn’t just about relocating; it’s about creating a new sense of belonging. Whether through organized events or simple acts of kindness from volunteers, the spirit of community at The University of Tampa is alive and well.
