ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Kerry Coombs is back in the game. The experienced football coach, known for his strong ties to Cincinnati, has joined the University of Michigan as their special teams coordinator.
Michigan announced Coombs’ hiring recently. A graduate of Colerain High School in 1979, he has 42 years of coaching experience. Coombs is celebrated for mentoring athletes at various levels, from high school to the NFL.
“Coach Kerry Coombs is an exceptional football coach, and we’re excited to have him,” said Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore. He believes Coombs’ leadership will greatly benefit the team’s special teams.
Coombs has an impressive history. He has served as a defensive coordinator and assistant coach at Ohio State University, and he was the special teams coordinator at the University of Cincinnati. He returned to Cincinnati as cornerbacks coach in January 2022, after previously coaching there from 2007 to 2011.
His career includes a noteworthy tenure with the Tennessee Titans. During his time in Nashville, he led one of the top defensive units, helping the team reach the playoffs in 2019.
Coombs is known for his success in recruiting, earning accolades like the 2017 Rivals.com National Recruiter of the Year. He also had a stellar run as the head coach at Colerain, leading the team to a state championship in 2004 and achieving an impressive overall record.
His background combines both coaching and deep community roots, making him a valued asset in Michigan’s football program. As sports commentator and former player, Mike Greenberg, points out, “Coaching is as much about mentorship as it is about strategy. Coombs embodies both.”
