Meet the inaugural girls golf team from Grosse Pointe Woods University-Liggett: Antonia Randazzo, Olivia Robinson, assistant coach Tony Caruso, Ella Caruso, head coach Dave Robinson, Olivia Boggs, Lexi Spain, and Ty’Lynn Thornton. They made history by playing their first match on August 21 in the Catholic League’s Intersectional Division.
The excitement was palpable, especially for Ty’Lynn Thornton. She confessed to feeling like a “nervous wreck” before her debut. “I was stressed, but having a friend on the other team made it better. It felt more like practice,” she shared. Ty’Lynn is a rookie in golf, inspired by her mom’s college experience and her own enjoyment of mini-golf.
With just a week and a half of practice under her belt, Ty’Lynn was ready to represent Liggett. She played alongside freshman Lexi Spain and other more experienced competitors at Lochmoor Country Club. Coach Dave Robinson reassured the new players, emphasizing the importance of enjoying the game over immediate results.
“It was wonderful to finally see this team form. As a long-time golf instructor, I’ve often wondered why there was no girls golf team at Liggett,” said Coach Robinson, who started a program at the school years ago. “Now, seeing students interested makes it all worthwhile.”
Liggett’s interest in girls golf was sparked by student enthusiasm. Ty’Lynn noted, “There just wasn’t enough interest before, but this year we showed we want to play.” The school administration was quick to support the new team, thanks in part to Coach Robinson’s push for its formation.
After a thrilling match, Liggett won by just one stroke. Coach Robinson admitted, “I didn’t expect a win, but it’s nice to start strong. The focus is on learning and having fun.” His granddaughter, Olivia Robinson, added, “With two beginners, I think we did great!”
Golf has grown significantly in the Catholic League, with Liggett being the 17th school to sponsor girls’ teams. In the past, only a few schools offered girls golf, but recent expansions have introduced strong new contenders. Notably, Toledo St. Ursula Academy has made waves in the league, winning several championships recently.
As golf becomes more popular among young women, programs like Liggett’s offer a chance for lasting friendships and skill development. The team is excited for what lies ahead—both in competitions and personal growth.
