BANNING, CA — The Banning Unified School District recently celebrated its 2025 District Science and Engineering Fair, showcasing some exciting projects. Caleb Clay, a fifth grader from Starlight Elementary School, took home the top prize with his innovative experiment titled “Soil Your Undies.” He buried pairs of underwear in various locations to study soil health.
Caleb’s idea is unique. He believes that farmers can use buried underwear to determine the health of their soil. According to his research, the condition of the buried fabric can indicate the presence of beneficial microorganisms that support plant growth. If the soil is healthy, these microorganisms break down the underwear more quickly.
This was just one of 18 winning projects selected to advance to the Riverside County Science and Engineering Fair. Projects are judged on how well they apply the scientific method, use materials, and display accuracy and creativity.
Other notable winners included Charlie Woolridge, a fourth grader from Brookside Elementary, who placed second, and eighth grader Cameron Centner from Summerwind Trails School, who came in third. These students will now move on to the state competition, with hopes of reaching the international level.
According to District Science Fair Coordinator Marie Ferguson, the Science and Engineering Fair inspires students and encourages their interest in academics. “Science is a great way for kids to engage with learning,” she said. “It connects math, reading, and writing in fun ways. Kids love science, and it sparks their curiosity.”
What’s even more impressive is that many experiments are conducted at home. This involvement encourages families to participate in their children’s learning process. Research shows that parents who actively engage in their children’s education at home contribute to their success in school and beyond.
Overall, the Banning Unified School District’s Science Fair not only celebrates creativity and inquiry but also strengthens the bond between students and their families in the learning journey.
