Exciting Announcement: Albany State University Welcomes New President Appointed by USG Board of Regents

ALBANY – Exciting news! The Board of Regents for the University System of Georgia has chosen Dr. Robert Scott as the finalist for the presidency of Albany State University (ASU).

Dr. Scott brings a wealth of experience. He currently holds the position of president of research and development at The Kraft Heinz Company. In this role, he manages a substantial budget of $120 million, focusing on innovation and organizational efficiency. Before joining Kraft Heinz in 2021, he had notable roles at Abbott Nutrition and The Coca-Cola Company. He’s also made significant contributions in academia, having served as a biology professor and in various administrative roles at colleges like Norfolk State University, Boston College, and Spelman College.

USG Chancellor Sonny Perdue praised Dr. Scott, calling him a results-oriented leader. He believes Dr. Scott’s unique mix of academic and corporate expertise will strengthen ASU’s presence in the community and the state. “His leadership will support Albany State’s role as a key workforce provider and highlight its importance as a prominent HBCU in Georgia,” Perdue said.

Dr. Scott is dedicated to enhancing student success. He has extensive experience in developing curriculum, securing research funding, and mentoring future leaders. He expressed his gratitude for the opportunity, emphasizing his commitment to historically Black colleges and universities. He stated, “Our success as a university relies on how well we align with the needs of our students and the community. We will focus on partnerships and programs that add real value.”

His background includes working on innovative product solutions at Abbott Nutrition, and developing eco-friendly packaging at Coca-Cola. Dr. Scott also held a senior scientist position at Procter & Gamble.

Bárbara Rivera Holmes, chair of the Albany State University Presidential Search Committee, noted that Dr. Scott’s leadership and academic experience would be essential for driving talent development and building industry connections in the Albany area. She expressed excitement about his potential to foster growth and create a competitive workforce in the region.

Dr. Scott earned his bachelor’s degree in biology from Norfolk State University and received his Ph.D. in biology from the Georgia Institute of Technology.

Albany State University is one of three public HBCUs in Georgia and plays a significant role in economic development, contributing $266 million to the economy of the Albany area and helping to attract large employers.

Since July 1, 2024, the university has been under the leadership of interim President Lawrence Drake, who took over from Marion Ross Fedrick, now at Georgia State University.

The Board of Regents plans to finalize the president position at an upcoming meeting, which will occur no sooner than five days after naming the finalist.
