Promotion in College Soccer: Brian Rowland’s Rise at Maryland
Brian Rowland has been promoted to Associate Head Coach of the University of Maryland men’s soccer team. This follows an impressive season where the team clinched the Big Ten Championship, finishing with an undefeated record.
Head Coach Sasho Cirovski, who has been at the helm for 34 seasons, expressed his excitement about Rowland’s promotion. “Brian has been key to our success,” he said. The Terps ended the regular season ranked No. 1, trailing only for a brief 78 seconds across their matches.
Rowland’s journey with Maryland has seen significant achievements. During his first tenure from 2015 to 2017, he helped the team secure back-to-back ACC championships and reach the College Cup. His return in 2024 has proven fruitful, contributing to the team’s recent successes.
Before returning to Maryland, Rowland led Temple University’s soccer program from 2018 to 2022. His time there marked the team’s first AAC Tournament win and their best-ever RPI ranking of 37 in 2019. He also coached players who went on to make headlines in the MLS draft.
“I am grateful for the opportunity to help guide our student-athletes toward excellence,” Rowland shared about his new role.
With a background as a goalkeeper at UMBC, Rowland set several records and earned accolades, including induction into the UMBC Athletics Hall of Fame. He also has professional playing experience and impressive coaching qualifications, including a USSF A License.
As soccer continues to grow in popularity in the U.S., programs like Maryland are crucial to its development. A recent survey from the National Federation of State High School Associations shows that high school soccer participation has seen an increase, indicating a bright future for collegiate soccer and coaching roles.
