Brown University has announced that David Lindstrom will become the new dean of its Graduate School, starting January 1, 2026. With over 30 years at Brown, Lindstrom is dedicated to enhancing the university’s doctoral and master of fine arts programs.
In a recent message, Provost Francis J. Doyle III praised Lindstrom’s impressive career. He highlighted Lindstrom’s commitment to graduate education and his leadership skills. “David is a respected teacher and mentor, and he understands how vital graduate students are to our research mission,” Doyle said.
Lindstrom will oversee about 1,700 students in 50 programs, focusing on academic excellence and improving student support. He aims to attract diverse talent and help graduates secure positions in leading research institutions. “Doctoral education is crucial for Brown’s goals. Our students play key roles in faculty research and shape the future of education,” Lindstrom stated.
Joining Brown in 1994, Lindstrom has held various roles, including chair of the Sociology Department. He helped create new programs that now see substantial student participation. His research spans migration, adolescent health, and reproductive behavior. He currently leads the NIH-funded Mesoamerican Migration Project, gathering data across multiple countries.
His mentorship has impacted many, with numerous former students achieving faculty roles and research positions globally. Doyle noted the search committee was impressed by Lindstrom’s dedication to supporting students’ career paths, both academic and non-academic.
Graduate education in the U.S. faces challenges, including fluctuating federal funding and variable job markets. Lindstrom sees these as opportunities for growth and adaptation. “We must innovate to strengthen doctoral education,” he remarked.
Lindstrom succeeds Tal Lewis, who served as dean from 2022 to 2025, and he steps in at a crucial time for graduate education.
