Elon University is expanding its reach in Charlotte by proposing a full-time law program. This initiative comes as part of plans to merge with Queens University of Charlotte, a move first announced in September and officially approved by trustees in December.
On Tuesday, Elon applied to the American Bar Association to launch a full-time Juris Doctor program in Charlotte, aiming for classes to start in fall 2027. If approved, this program would be hosted on the Queens campus, enhancing educational opportunities in the region.
Currently, Charlotte is lacking a full-time law school since the Charlotte School of Law closed in 2017. “Charlotte needs a law school,” stated Zak Kramer, dean of Elon University School of Law. “It’s the largest city in the U.S. without one.”
Elon has offered a part-time Law Flex Program in Charlotte since 2024, catering to working professionals and students balancing various commitments. Kayla Price, a Law Flex student, called it a “game changer” for her lifestyle.
The planned full-time program would not replace the existing offerings, but would complement them. “It’s about growing our presence in Charlotte,” Kramer explained, noting that they expect to enroll around 75 students, giving them vital connections in the local legal community.
Financially, the new law program aims to be more accessible. With the average cost of law school rising—around $230,000 for tuition and living expenses—Elon’s model proposes completing the program in just two and a half years. Kramer highlighted that this structure allows students to graduate with less debt.
Dr. Connie L. Book, Elon’s president, emphasized the importance of the merger with Queens. “Together we can achieve what we couldn’t have done alone,” she said. This partnership not only enhances educational offerings but also avoids significant costs, like building new facilities.
The full-time program is expected to cater to a wider range of students, from recent undergraduates to career changers. Jack Randolph, a paralegal enrolled in the Law Flex Program, shared excitement about the expanded options for aspiring lawyers in Charlotte.
If the ABA approves, applications will open in August 2026. Nonetheless, the merger with Queens still requires regulatory approval.
