South Carolina State University Welcomes New Commencement Speakers
South Carolina State University has named its new commencement speakers for the upcoming ceremony on Friday. Yolanda Williams, the President of the SC State National Alumni Association, and Zaria Tucker, the President of the Student Government Association, will take the stage at Oliver C. Dawson Stadium at 10 a.m.
“Commencement is a chance to celebrate our students’ hard work,” said SC State President Alexander Conyers. He noted that both Williams and Tucker bring unique insights that make the event even more meaningful. They exemplify leadership and commitment to the school and its students.
This announcement comes shortly after the university opted not to have South Carolina Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette as the speaker due to security concerns. The decision sparked controversy among students, who voiced their opposition to Evette’s political stance not aligning with the university’s values as a historically Black institution.
During Friday’s ceremony, SC State plans to award nearly 380 undergraduate degrees. President Conyers praised Williams as a dedicated alumna and Tucker as an effective student leader, emphasizing their roles in shaping a better future for the university community.
Gates will open at 6:30 a.m. for attendees, with seating starting at 8:30 a.m. If weather conditions are poor, the ceremony will be moved indoors to the Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center.
The university is currently experiencing heightened attention. A group of lawmakers has threatened to cut funding in response to the Evette controversy. Meanwhile, SC State is also facing a lawsuit from its foundation, which alleges pressure for financial contributions.
In a positive development, the university recently launched a $41 million fundraising campaign aimed at enhancing the student experience and reinforcing its status as a leading research institution.
These events reflect a mix of challenges and opportunities for SC State, showcasing the dynamic environment of higher education today. As graduation approaches, the focus remains on celebrating achievements while navigating complex issues that affect the university’s future.
