Exciting Beginnings: Western New England University Students Settle In for a New Academic Year!

Springfield, MA – Students are trading summer fun for the school grind as exam season approaches. Thursday marked the start of a new year at Western New England University, welcoming freshmen and transfer students.

This year is special. The university is welcoming its largest class yet, with 1,100 new students from 36 states and 19 countries. Gregory Matthews, the Senior Vice President of Enrollment Management and Student Life, shared that the school has worked hard to create a friendly environment to attract more students. “We want to ensure we have a vibrant and healthy community,” he said.

To help smooth the transition, various organizations, clubs, and sports teams pitched in. Senior Shannon Daly noted, “When families arrive, we jump right in to assist with moving.” She remembered her own moving day just three years ago, feeling grateful for the support she received.

Jeanne Powers, Executive Director of the Student Hub, emphasized the importance of making the day easier for families. “It can be nerve-wracking. We aim to help everyone settle in comfortably.”

This year’s large incoming class reflects a broader trend in higher education, where universities are increasingly focusing on making their campuses welcoming and inclusive. According to recent surveys, 65% of prospective students prefer schools that offer a strong sense of community and support networks.

Overall, the excitement of students embracing a fresh start is palpable. As the semester begins, these newcomers are not just starting a journey in education—they are stepping into a vibrant community that values connection and support.
