Gustavson’s group views Las Vegas as a vibrant hub for soccer, stating, “The city welcomes millions each year and has a passionate soccer community.” They plan to finance the new team privately, separate from other arena projects in Las Vegas. While details of the proposal are under wraps, Gustavson intends to build a soccer-specific stadium in Las Vegas and may use an interim venue in the meantime.
At just 30, Gustavson has a background in sports management, especially in developing the Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) program at the University of Southern California. He is also involved in his family’s renowned thoroughbred farm.
The potential relocation has sparked significant concern among Whitecaps fans. Many have rallied behind the “Save The Caps” movement, advocating for the team’s stay in Vancouver. This has prompted renewed discussions between city officials, the provincial government, and MLS.
The Whitecaps’ ownership recently acknowledged the challenges they face, including stadium issues, low revenue, and the struggle to attract buyers committed to keeping the team in Vancouver. In 16 months, they’ve engaged with over 100 parties but have not received any viable local offers.
Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim urged the team and provincial government to collaborate for a solution. He stressed the importance of community support, asking fans to remain vocal and unified in this fight. Premier David Eby of British Columbia has also expressed determination to keep the team local.
This situation is reminiscent of other sports teams that faced relocations in North America, such as the St. Louis Rams moving to Los Angeles. Similar fan campaigns have often been instrumental in retaining teams through community engagement and investor pressure.
MLS Commissioner Don Garber has been in talks with local leaders in Vancouver, acknowledging the constructive discussions and pledging to explore options for the Whitecaps’ future.
