Michigan Women’s Lacrosse Team Prepares for Big Ten Tournament
The University of Michigan’s women’s lacrosse team, ranked No. 8, is set to kick off the Big Ten Tournament on April 22. They will face off against No. 18 Penn State at noon in a quarterfinal game at U-M Lacrosse Stadium. Fans can catch the action live on B1G+.
This marks Michigan’s eighth appearance in the Big Ten Tournament, where they earned the No. 4 seed thanks to a 5-3 record in conference play. Their opponent, Penn State, secured the No. 5 seed with a 4-4 record.
Notable Achievements this Season
Michigan has had a stellar season, notching six wins against ranked teams. A highlight was their first-ever victory over No. 3 Maryland. Their strong start also included a 4-0 record in Big Ten play, a first for the program.
The Wolverines’ defense is noteworthy as well. Currently ranked No. 17 nationally, they allow just 8.31 goals per game and forced Maryland into 14 turnovers recently. Taylor Cullen and Grace Callahan were key players in that effort, creating turnovers and disrupting plays.
In goal, freshman Elizabeth Johnson has stepped up significantly, recording 13 saves against No. 2 Northwestern, bringing her total for the season to 124—ranking her fourth in the Big Ten. Her impressive save percentage of .488 also puts her among the top goalies in the conference.
Personal Milestones
Two players recently achieved career milestones. Ava Class and Calli Norris both surpassed 100 career points, becoming the 10th and 11th players in program history to do so. Class boasts 104 points, while Norris has 102.
Emma Burke has made her mark this season too, setting a new record for career draw controls with 278 wins. She ranks 12th nationally, averaging 8.94 draws per game.
Callahan is on track to tie Michigan’s all-time record for ground balls, needing just four more to match Maddie Burns’ record of 111. Her performance has also seen her ranking 11th in the conference for caused turnovers.
Looking Forward
A win against Penn State would propel Michigan to a semifinal showdown against the No. 1 seed, Northwestern, on April 24. If they fall short, all eyes will turn to the NCAA Tournament selection show on May 3, where their postseason fate will be revealed.
This season not only reflects the team’s talent but also their resilience. With a blend of experienced players and fresh talent, Michigan’s women’s lacrosse team aims to make a lasting impression in the tournament.
