On December 5, Ocracoke’s Bread of Life Food Pantry received a generous boost of over $20,000 from a raffle organized by Leslie Lanier, owner of the local bookstore, Books to be Red. The raffle featured two autographed books by best-selling author Patricia Cornwell, who made a surprise visit to the shop just days prior.
When Cornwell learned about the raffle, she offered to match ticket sales up to $10,000. This exciting news spread quickly on social media. Lanier found herself processing over 4,000 tickets, raising a total of $10,590 directly from ticket sales. The community rallied behind the cause, showing immense support from customers, friends, and even strangers on the island.
Leslie expressed her gratitude: “I had customers, sorority sisters, church friends, and many more buying tickets. It’s amazing how everyone came together.” She even added additional items from her shop to the raffle to increase the excitement.
During the drawing, members of the community helped pick the winning tickets, reflecting a warm sense of togetherness. Kathy Mangus, one of the lucky winners who received a dish towel and cutting board, donated generously back to the pantry. Lanier noted the community’s kindness was remarkable, saying, “We’re just astounded by everyone’s generosity.”
Pastor Tim Howard from the Life Saving Church, which oversees the food pantry, was equally moved. He noted that while the pantry is doing well right now, supplies from their usual provider, the Food Bank of the Albemarle, have been inconsistent. He hopes they can source more food locally, especially with recent drives organized by various community groups.
