The Lorain City School Board of Education gathered on January 13 to elect new leadership for 2025. Jay Ferguson was chosen as president, with Barbie Washington stepping into the role of vice president.

During the meeting, the board decided to keep their regular meeting times the same: 5 p.m. on the second and fourth Mondays of each month. Washington proposed changing the time to 6 p.m., but board member Bill Sturgill disagreed. He pointed out that when they previously adjusted meeting times to increase attendance, there was no noticeable change, and claimed that meetings should cater to the convenience of board members.

The board meets in the board room on the first floor of the LCCC building at Lorain High School located at 2600 Ashland Ave. For those who can’t attend, meetings are also broadcast on TV20 and available on their YouTube channel.
In addition to the leadership elections, Christa Lokiec, the communications director, spoke about January being School Board Recognition Month. She emphasized the hard work board members put in, stating, “You all volunteer countless hours making difficult decisions to ensure that our students receive the best possible education.” This month’s theme is “School Board Superheroes,” reflecting the important role board members play as champions of education. To honor their commitment, each board member received a certificate recognizing their service.
