NCCU Football’s Coaching Changes for 2026
North Carolina Central University’s head football coach, Trei Oliver, has made significant changes to his staff for the upcoming 2026 season. Five new coaches are joining the Eagles, aiming to boost the team’s performance.
New Additions
Chris Barnette takes on the role of assistant head coach and offensive coordinator. He previously worked at Alabama State, where his team scored over 42 points per game and became a standout in the Southwestern Athletic Conference. Barnette has a strong history in HBCU football, having coached at South Carolina State, Winston-Salem State, and North Carolina A&T.
Tommy Thigpen will serve as the defensive coordinator and safeties coach. A former player at the University of North Carolina, Thigpen brings a wealth of experience from his time coaching at major schools like Tennessee and Auburn. Before his new role, he was coaching linebackers in the UFL.
Grayson Reed joins as the offensive line coach. He led an impressive offensive line at his previous school, USC, helping the team to achieve significant passing and scoring records. Reed also has valuable experience from his time at Texas A&M.
Elijah Coleman is stepping in as the cornerbacks coach and recruiting coordinator. Coming from Howard University, where he played and coached, Coleman was part of the team that won the MEAC title in 2023.
Lastly, Omar Beasley becomes the Director of Speed Development. An NCCU alum and former track star, Beasley is known for his innovative coaching methods that integrate new technologies into sprint training. He has over 30 years of experience and previously coached at North Carolina Wesleyan University.
Looking Ahead
NCCU finished 2025 with an 8-4 record, marking a strong season for the program. With these new coaches, the Eagles hope to build on that success. Coach Oliver, now entering his sixth season, holds an impressive record of 45-25.
