Oscar winners Sean Baker and Michelle Yeoh are teaming up for a new film, “Sandiwara,” set to premiere at the Berlin Film Festival. This project is part of the London-based fashion brand Self-Portrait’s Residency program, which aims to merge various creative disciplines.
“Sandiwara” will showcase Yeoh in five different roles. The film is set in a vibrant Malaysian night market, focusing on stories that highlight aspects of Malaysian culture that are often overlooked. The title comes from the Malay word for drama or theatrical performance.
Baker will present Yeoh with the Honorary Golden Bear for Lifetime Achievement at the Berlinale’s opening ceremony on February 12. The film’s special screening will take place on February 13, followed by a discussion with both Baker and Yeoh.
This project not only highlights the director’s ability to tell impactful stories but also marks an exciting collaboration between fashion and cinema.
