CRYSTAL RIVER, Fla. — Citrus County students are excited to return to a favorite field trip spot, the Marine Science Station, which was closed for several months due to damage from Hurricane Helene.
The station is a key learning resource where students can explore and understand marine life. It reopened its outdoor areas in January, allowing students to experience nature up close again.
“It’s a great way to bring the classroom lessons to life,” said Earnie Olsen, the station supervisor. This spot is especially popular with elementary students and high schoolers studying life sciences.
During the storm, flooding caused debris and logs to spread across the area. “There was marsh debris everywhere,” Olsen explained. The storm surge impacted marshes and mangroves, leaving behind floating vegetation when the waters receded.
Though the indoor classrooms are still being repaired, nature thrives outdoors. Olsen guided a group of fourth graders, highlighting the wetlands. “Do you see all the land out here? We call those parts of our watershed. When water hits the land, it sheds,” he said. This hands-on learning helps students grasp concepts better.
“Experiencing nature is one of the best ways for kids to learn,” Olsen added. It’s a unique opportunity for students to connect with the local ecosystem. Repairs for the indoor classrooms are on track, and Olsen hopes they’ll be ready soon.
