Gollum is set to make a big-screen comeback! Warner Bros. has announced that “The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum” will hit theaters on December 17, 2027. This exciting news comes alongside the release dates for other films, including the next “Evil Dead” on July 24, 2026, and M. Night Shyamalan’s “Remain” on October 23, 2026.
Fans aren’t surprised by the December release. All six films from the “Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” franchises opened during the holiday season. Collectively, these trilogies raked in a staggering $2.9 billion worldwide, highlighting their popularity and drawing power.
Originally announced last summer, “The Hunt for Gollum” was slated for a 2026 release but has been pushed back by a year. Andy Serkis is back, not just as the director but also reprising his iconic role as Gollum. His unique portrayal through motion capture began with “The Two Towers” in 2002. Serkis has also directed projects like “Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle” and “Venom: Let There Be Carnage.”
Peter Jackson, along with producers Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, are deeply involved in this new project. Boyens shared with Empire magazine that the story takes place between Bilbo’s birthday party and the Mines of Moria. It will explore a specific, intense narrative through Gollum’s perspective, uncovering layers of his complex character.
Interestingly, original cast members like Ian McKellen and Orlando Bloom have expressed interest in returning, depending on how their characters fit into the new story. However, no additional casting has been confirmed yet.
This film will mark a significant return to live-action since “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies” in 2014, making it a highly anticipated addition to the franchise.
In recent years, there has been a resurgence of interest in adaptations of fantasy literature. According to a 2022 survey, 57% of fans expressed excitement for more content from favorite franchises, suggesting a robust market for projects like this one.
As the film nears its release, the anticipation is palpable, with discussions on social media buzzing about what this new tale will bring to the beloved world of Middle-earth.
