University of Utah to Open New Hospital in West Valley City
The University of Utah is set to launch its first off-campus hospital in West Valley City, thanks to a generous $75 million donation from the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation. University President Taylor Randall announced this exciting news during a press conference with community leaders.
"This gift will change lives for generations," Randall said. The new hospital aims to provide top-notch health care to the residents and create job training opportunities for the community. In developing the plans, the university listened closely to what West Valley City residents need.
Randall emphasized the importance of equitable health care, saying, "Today, we are defining history." The new facility will not only bring medical services but also job prospects, addressing the growing demand for hospital services in a city that is Utah’s second largest.
West Valley City Mayor Karen Lang expressed her gratitude to the Eccles family. She highlighted that this hospital symbolizes hope for the community, allowing residents moments of healing and growth. Lang is particularly enthusiastic about seeing local youth train to become medical professionals, contributing back to the city.
Governor Spencer Cox brought attention to health disparities in Utah. He noted that people in Salt Lake City live, on average, 10 years longer than those in nearby West Valley City. He established the One Utah Health Collaborative to tackle these inequalities and believes the new hospital will make a significant impact.
"This day will go down in history as something unprecedented in Utah," he remarked. He praised the Eccles family’s ongoing commitment to the community, stating their contribution might have the largest impact in a century.
Lisa Eccles, Spencer Eccles’ daughter, shared her excitement for the project, highlighting that the community deserves better access to health care. The hospital will connect the community with the university’s top doctors across more than 200 specialties. "Together, we will save lives and create an educational and economic hub for West Valley City," she added.
This new development in health care is a significant step towards improving medical services in the area and making a lasting difference for future generations.
