Exciting Developments at Elon University: President Updates Parents on Queens Merger and New School of Engineering and Computing

During the University Update on September 27, Elon University President Connie Book shared exciting news about future plans for the university in Alumni Gym. This event, held during Elon’s Family Weekend, was a chance for visiting parents to learn about new initiatives.

One significant update is the proposed merger between Elon and Queens University of Charlotte. If approved, this merger will lead to Queens having its own budget, allowing it to thrive independently while benefiting Elon students who intern in Charlotte. Book emphasized the importance of this merger for expanding graduate programs.

Elon is also introducing new fields of study, including neuroscience, digital content management, and cybersecurity. There’s even a new school of engineering and computing set to open in spring 2026. Book noted that planning for this expansion began back in 2020, and they are excited to see it come to fruition.

Book addressed questions about tuition and enrollment, expressing a desire for moderate growth in graduate programs, especially in areas where there are workforce shortages, like nursing. Recent data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics highlights a projected increase in nursing jobs, making this emphasis timely.

Parent Anne Trumbore, who works in higher education, shared her enthusiasm. She appreciates how Elon stands out in the academic community. “I think the merger with Queens is a smart move,” Trumbore stated. “It shows that they are looking ahead while still prioritizing undergraduates.”

Family Weekend activities were scheduled to continue through September 28, providing families more opportunities to engage with the Elon community.
