CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — Astronomers have stumbled upon an intriguing new object in the Milky Way. An international team recently announced the discovery of this mysterious object, which may be a star or even a pair of stars. It emits X-rays and shoots out radio waves, with a cycle that repeats every 44 minutes during peak activity.

Located about 15,000 light-years away in a busy region of the galaxy, this object might be a highly magnetized dead star, like a neutron star or white dwarf, said Ziteng Andy Wang from Curtin University in Australia. However, he admits it could also be something entirely unknown.

NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory accidentally found the X-ray emissions last year while studying a supernova remnant. This marks the first time X-rays have been detected from what is known as a long-period radio transient, a rare type of cosmic object that cycles through radio signals in short intervals.

The exact nature of this object, named ASKAP J1832−091, remains unclear. Its hyperactive phase lasted about a month, during which it emitted X-rays. Outside of this time, it was silent, hinting that there could be more like it out there. Wang noted, “Our discovery doesn’t solve the mystery, but it brings us closer to two possibilities: we’re either discovering something new or observing known objects in ways we’ve never seen before.”
