Exciting Expansion: Fishnet Center Plans to Serve All Coastal Districts in Tamil Nadu!

Collecting Discarded Fishnets: A Step Toward Cleaner Oceans

In August 2024, the Kasimedu Fishing Harbour in Chennai launched a pilot project focused on collecting discarded fishnets and other marine litter. Over just one year, this center gathered an impressive 26,101 kg of debris. Encouraged by this success, the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) plans to open similar centers in all coastal districts, including Thoothukudi.

Fishermen also benefited from this initiative, earning Rs 9.93 lakh as an incentive, which amounts to Rs 38 for each kilogram of abandoned, lost, and discarded fishing gear (ALDFG) they brought in.

A recent study by the Suganthi Devadason Marine Research Institute (SDMRI) found that discarded fishing gear made up a staggering 47.5% of litter by number and 46% by weight in 52 fishing villages across 13 coastal districts. This highlights the significant impact of fishing practices on our environment.

Supriya Sahu, Additional Chief Secretary for Environment, Climate Change & Forests, noted that over 23,270 kg of collected fishing gear has already been sent to certified recyclers. The initiative not only aims to reduce pollution but also seeks to create a circular economy, turning “ghost gear” into reusable materials.

The need for such measures is pressing. According to a recent report from the United Nations, 640,000 tons of abandoned fishing gear ends up in oceans each year, contributing to serious environmental damage. This initiative in Tamil Nadu could serve as a model for other coastal regions struggling with marine debris.

Fishermen and local communities are showing positive reactions, with many expressing hope for cleaner waters and healthier marine life. Social media is buzzing with support for sustainability efforts, fostering a collective sense of responsibility.

As we push forward, these small yet impactful steps can create significant change for our oceans. For more on the impacts of marine debris, explore this UN report which details the global crisis of plastic pollution.
